Tribune Announces Publisher Transition
at The Sun in Baltimore
Company Names
Timothy Ryan President, Publisher & Chief
Executive Officer
Matthews to Leave Post March 23
CHICAGO, March 19, 2007 -- Tribune
Publishing, a division of Tribune Company (NYSE:TRB), today
named Timothy (Tim) Ryan as president, publisher and chief
executive officer of The Baltimore Sun Company, succeeding
Rondra Matthews who is stepping down for personal reasons.
Ryan served as vice president/circulation and operations
at The Sun from July 2000 to February 2005, and since then
has been vice president/circulation and consumer marketing
at the Chicago Tribune. He will assume his new duties March
23.
"Tim will be outstanding in succeeding
Ronnie," said
Bob Gremillion, Tribune Publishing group vice president.
"He has extensive experience at major market newspapers,
serving in positions of increasing responsibility in circulation
and marketing -- including five years in management at
The Sun. He knows Baltimore well and understands what readers
and advertisers expect from the region’s best-read
newspaper."
The Sun is the area’s leading
provider of local news, information and entertainment through
a variety of print and online products, including baltimoresun.com
and a growing and prosperous family of community newspapers.
Ryan was named vice president/circulation
and consumer marketing for the Chicago Tribune in March
2005. He was responsible for sales, marketing and distribution
to Chicago Tribune subscribers and retail customers throughout
Chicago and the Midwest. Ryan’s management responsibilities
also included oversight of RedEye, the rapidly growing
young adult oriented edition of the Tribune. He worked
as vice president of circulation at The Philadelphia Inquirer
from June 1993 to June 2000.
"I am excited about returning to Baltimore
and the opportunity to help shape the future of The Sun,"
said Ryan. "This is a great company with a long tradition
of success. I am confident we can build on that tradition
and meet the evolving needs of readers and advertisers."
Ryan started his career at the Chicago
Tribune in 1982, serving in a variety of circulation management
positions. A native of Rochester, N.Y., Ryan holds a bachelor’s
degree in political science from the University of Notre
Dame and a master’s degree in business administration
from Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management.
Matthews explained her decision to step
down in an e-mail to Sun employees: "I admire greatly
the rich tradition of The Sun’s service to this community,
and the talent of the staff who dedicate themselves to
quality journalism and serving our readers and advertisers
with passion and excellence," said Matthews. "I
have been conflicted by the demands of this job and my
desire to be attentive to an aging parent. I have decided
to return to Virginia to spend more time with my mother
and other family members. Tim Ryan is a great choice to
succeed me and build on the momentum we've established
during the last six months."
