Tribune Names New Publisher
at Newsday
Ray Jansen to Retire
In August;
Newsday President
and Chief Operating Officer Timothy Knight Named Publisher
CHICAGO, July 19, 2004
-- Tribune Publishing, a division
of Tribune Company (NYSE:TRB), today announced that Newsday
president and chief operating officer Timothy Knight has been
named publisher and chief executive officer of the newspaper
effective August 15. Knight will succeed Raymond Jansen, who
is retiring.
Jansen announced his retirement in a letter
to Newsday employees. “In mid-August, I will
retire as Newsday publisher,” Jansen wrote.
“I had planned on leaving before yearend and under other
circumstances I probably would have done that. But, understanding
what our management has to do to repair the damage to our
circulation credibility, it became apparent that my departure
date should be sooner than anticipated.” Jansen has
served as Newsday publisher since 1994.
Knight joined Newsday in February
2003 as executive vice president and general manager. He was
named president and chief operating officer of Newsday
in July 2004, and took on responsibility for the daily business
operations of all non-news departments of the Long Island-based
newspaper.
“Newsday is a great newspaper
with excellent journalism and a rich history of service to
the community,” said Knight. “I look forward to
continuing to work with all of our outstanding and dedicated
employees as we serve our readers, advertisers and community.
With respect to the recent circulation issues, we will continue
to confront matters honestly and openly. There is much work
ahead of us, but I am very confident about Newsday’s
future.”
Before joining Newsday, Knight served
as vice president/strategic marketing, development and finance
for the Chicago Tribune. He also was responsible for the newspaper’s
interactive operations. From 1998 to 2001, he was vice president/strategy
and development of Tribune Publishing Company. In that position
he oversaw acquisitions, strategic planning and development
projects.
“Tim has demonstrated leadership throughout
his career at Tribune, and particularly since joining Newsday,”
said Jack Fuller, Tribune Publishing’s president. “He
has a track record of success and has established a solid
relationship of trust with Newsday’s staff
and advertisers.”
Born in Flint, Mich., on August 24, 1965,
Knight holds a bachelor’s degree in accounting from
Marquette University and a juris doctorate with honors from
DePaul University College of Law. He also attended the corporate
finance program at London Business School. His community activities
include serving on the Chairman’s Council for the Heckscher
Museum of Art in Huntington, N.Y.
