Chicagotribune.com and Latimes.com Honored for Innovative Use of Digital Media

Newspaper web sites win Digital Edge Awards from the Newspaper Association Of America

CHICAGO, January 28, 2003 -- Tribune Interactive, Inc., a leader in interactive news and information Web sites and a subsidiary of Tribune Company (NYSE: TRB), today announced that chicagotribune.com and latimes.com were awarded 2003 Digital Edge Awards at the Newspaper Association of America CONNECTIONS Conference in Orlando yesterday. Both sites won Digital Edge Awards for Most Innovative Use of Digital Media.

"These awards acknowledge the broad talent and expertise of Tribune Interactive's editorial teams," said David Hiller, Tribune Interactive president. "Both the chicagotribune.com and latimes.com news packages present comprehensive news and feature stories in a compelling, informative and engaging way -- and are constructed in a manner to best complement users' online experience and navigation."

Chicagotribune.com news feature "Still Standing: A Portrait of America One Year Later," http://www.chicagotribune.com/anniversary, won in the best news event category among newspapers with national or daily circulation of more than 250,000. The news package provided chicagotribune.com readers in-depth coverage of the anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks and the ongoing battle against terrorism. It included detailed storytelling, informative graphics, interactive timelines, message boards, photos, audio and
video galleries.

"Still Standing: A Portrait of America One Year Later" divided news coverage into 12 categories: Sept. 11, 2002; The Midwest; New York, The Pentagon and the Philadelphia field; homeland security; airport security; war in Afghanistan; culture and religion; economics; policy; and a look back to Sept. 11, 2001. The news categories were complemented by photo essays from Chicago Tribune photographers from around the world; "Voice of the people," a section where users share their thoughts on the anniversary; an online searchable database honoring the victims of the 9/11 attacks produced in conjunction with other Tribune Interactive Web sites; and an archive collection of news stories on the war on terror dating from Sept. 11, 2001, through Dec. 31, 2001.

The latimes.com multimedia feature "Enrique's Journey," http://www.latimes.com/Enrique, won in the best feature category among newspapers with national or daily circulation of more than 250,000. The package tells the story of Enrique, a Honduran teenager who is struggling to reunite with his mother in the United States. "Enrique's Journey" captures the
young man's challenging travels and setbacks through the pen and lens of Los Angeles Times staff writer Sonia Nazario and photographer Don Bartletti. The feature tells Enrique's story in six chapters, divided into subsections so users could move easily through the lengthy narrative. Online, the package included:

  • photo galleries;
  • maps and Web-only statistical charts that provided a quick, contextual framework to the story;
  • "Along the Tracks" sidebars, which provided glimpses into the lives of people along Mexican and Central American railways;
  • an "About This Story" section that offered background on Nazario and Bartletti's reporting methods;
  • and a bulletin board featuring user questions and responses from Nazario and Bartletti.

Latimes.com introduces each chapter with a video overview by Nazario and
commentary from Bartletti about how he captured certain images and the meaning
those images convey to him.
