Tribune has a long history of strategic
investments and working with innovators in the media business.
Our investments provide a vehicle for product or market innovation
and a window into a segment of the media business that competes
with or enhances our newspaper and television businesses.
A complete list of our strategic investment may be found: here.
Tribune invests with the objective to strengthen our existing
businesses of newspaper publishing, television broadcasting
or syndicated and online media. We seek to build shareholder
value by working with and investing in outside companies that
are developing complementary or new segments which we aren't
pursuing directly. Our criteria for investing include:
- Access to technologies, content, markets or capabilities
that enhance our core media businesses
- Entry point into a new or related market
- Financial return, both through our ownership stake
and through enhancement of our business
- Opportunity for Tribune to contribute to a company's
success factors or reduce their risk factor
- A clear path to learning, and an identifiable process
to communicate that learning within Tribune
- Provides a placeholder in segments of the media business
which are in a developmental stage and for which the
timing is not appropriate for Tribune to pursue it directly
Identifying investment opportunities
Investment opportunities arise from many different sources,
often emerging through relationships and contacts that develop
in the operation of our businesses. We encourage references
from our employees, customers, vendors and partners. Unsolicited
proposals will be perused, but will be held to the same high
standard of alignment with our businesses that we apply to
opportunities that are generated within the company or from
our existing investment network.
